Implants are placed through a surgical procedure that attaches an artificial root to the jawbone. In addition, bone grafting operations are sometimes necessary when there is not enough bone present to secure the implant root.

There are several parts that make up a finished dental implant. Made of titanium, the implant itself refers to the portion that is secured to the jawbone. The abutment, which is made of titanium, gold or porcelain, is the portion that is secured on top of the implant. The final component of an implant is the restoration. A type of crown, the restoration is designed to look like a real tooth and can be made of metal or porcelain. The entire process takes place in several stages over a period of five to six months.
